Frequently Asked Questions
What does an apprenticeship involve?
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employee you can earn while you learn and you gain practical skills from the workplace.
Each apprenticeship is made up of:
▪ a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) or Diploma. This is the competence or skills based element of the Apprenticeship. To achieve the NVQ you will need to develop and then demonstrate your practical skills in relation to the nationally set standards for the qualification that you are undertaking.
▪ a Technical certificate. This is the knowledge-based qualification within each Apprenticeship.
▪ Key skill qualifications, usually in Communication and Application of Number. These cover the core skills required to function effectively in life, work, education and training.
Apprenticeships are aimed at candidates in an operational role and feature an NVQ/Diploma and Technical Certificate at Level 2 (broadly equivalent to 5 GCSE passes at grades A*-C). Advanced Apprenticeships require greater levels of responsibility at work. The NVQ and Certificate within the Advanced Apprenticeship are at level 3 and the Key Skills are at Level 2.
How is the Apprenticeship delivered?
Training is delivered on and off-the-job. You will usually be required to attend off-the-job at a Redwood Skills centre or your employer’s training premises to complete courses covering the technical certificate and the key skills. Training for the NVQ/Diploma will be planned with your employer and delivered on-the-job.
How long is the Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships take on average 8 to 12 months to complete. Advanced Apprenticeships feature qualifications at level 3 and usually take longer, typically 15 to 24 months dependent on the specific course, the options you choose to take and your prior experience and qualifications.
What are the eligibility criteria?
Eligibility criteria vary between Apprenticeships and the level of qualification you want to complete, but generally you will need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education or training. Applicants for places on an Advanced Apprenticeship usually need to have GCSE English and mathematics at grade A*-C or other equivalent qualifications.
